ERNIE X1
by Baidu·China·Released
Baidu's reasoning model — Chinese-language counterpart to DeepSeek R1 and OpenAI o-series.
About this model
ERNIE X1 (March 2025) is Baidu's reasoning model — the Chinese counterpart to OpenAI's o-series and DeepSeek R1. Released alongside ERNIE 4.5 and integrated directly into Yiyan (Baidu's consumer chat app), ERNIE X1 generates a visible reasoning trace before producing the final answer.
X1 is closed-weights and currently mainland-only. Priced aggressively (roughly half of OpenAI o1) and integrated into Baidu Cloud's enterprise tier with full CAC content compliance. The reasoning quality is competitive with DeepSeek R1 on Chinese-language math; English performance still trails.
Strengths
- •Visible reasoning traces (unlike o1; like DeepSeek R1)
- •Aggressive pricing vs international reasoning models
- •CAC-compliant by default for mainland deployments
- •Tight Baidu ecosystem integration (Search, Maps, Apollo)
Limitations
- •Closed weights
- •English reasoning trails Chinese significantly
- •Mainland-only data residency
- •Limited international developer ecosystem
When to use it
- →Chinese-market reasoning-heavy enterprise workloads
- →Mainland consumer apps needing chain-of-thought visibility
- →Math + STEM tutoring in Chinese
Architecture & training
Architecture details limited. Baidu has confirmed ERNIE X1 shares the ERNIE 4.5 MoE backbone with additional reasoning-trace post-training analogous to DeepSeek R1's approach.
